#1 West Philadelphia Alliance for Children - 2 Books for a Philadelphia School Library
West Philadelphia Alliance for Children (WePAC) was founded during the 2003-04 school year as an outgrowth of an urban ministry project between Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and various civic groups. It addresses early childhood literacy by reopening formerly closed Philadelphia public elementary school libraries and providing volunteers, donated resources, and reading enrichment activities designed to foster literacy skills and a lifelong love of reading. More than 95% of Philadelphia public elementary schools lack a functioning library.
WePAC partners with eleven elementary schools to provide book access to students and continues its efforts to increase that number. It serves thousands of school students, many of whom have no books in their homes and live at or below the poverty level. More than 47,000 books are circulated annually through this program.
